 Kidding Naturally!!!

Kidding season has or is descending upon us!

For those that want to supernourish those third trimester does (or bucks that may be a bit thin from being in rut and then going into winter)   take a look at our Better Daze tm herb mix.  (Click here) It makes a wonderful prenatal and is also great for young stock (just stir into their bottle or lambar), milking stock and senior stock   (see our blog for a small story with pics shared with us this past week on a nubian www.firmeadowllc.com/blog ).   This product is also very popular with pregnant bitches and lactating bitches, as well as added to puppie's supplemental feedings.  Just mix right into wet food.

Prepare tm (Click here)  is used to help a doe’s body get ready for the event of parturition.  It provides the body the fuel it needs to properly sequence the correct amount of hormones as well as tone the uterine muscles etc.   Combined with an appropriate diet and exercise this enables your doe to be much more likely to have a successful kidding.

Don't forget that your doe’s immune (Click Here) systems lower in efficiency for approximately two weeks before kidding through two weeks after (yes for an entire month!).  Adding MMune TM herb mix will help her compensate for that challenge.   see the products section on our website - then look for herb mixes.

Also,  due to lowered immunity it is a very good time to be sure that you are up to date on your parasite program.   We like to use our DWorm A TM (Click here) - which can be fed right through pregnancy, while in lactation and even to four day old kids (I start mine on it as soon as we move them out to the barn- as they are tasting things already picking up worm eggs).   This product helps their bodies to break down worm eggs in the GI tract, helps their body attack internal parasites including tapeworms,  helps the body to oxygenate the placenta, helps the body counter toxins ingested (moldy hay or feed or plants), and helps support the body in mycoplasma invasions.   Some additional information and stories can be read on our blog about DWorm A.  Available in 8 ounce, 16 ounce and 8 pound sizes.  Remember that many animals are reinfecting themselves DAILY from their pastures and facilities and that those parasites ingested are mature egg laying adults in an average of just 21 days.   You want to break that cycle more than just every few weeks or months if cleaning your environment from new contamination and not allowing parasites to age to the point of damaging their host (your goat or creature) is your goal.

Coccidia is a huge challenge for many of us.   GI Soother TM (Click here) has been a best friend for many aiming to avoid or counter this problem in their herds & is also very popular with poultry and starting chicks / ducklings etc.   You're already paying top dollar for feed to allow your kids to reach their fullest growth potential , don't let cocci wreck their intestinal tract.  Completely natural product that doesn't toxify your precious kids but helps them to also be more efficient with their feed!  We start it in lambars on our farm again as soon as we put them in the barn (usually 4 or 5 days old for us) to help their bodies start catching oocysts (eggs) before they even hatch.  Remember, by the time you see parasite or coccidia symptoms there is already intestinal damage!  Also available in 8 ounce, 16 ounce and 8 lb sizes.      Any of these products that you mix in lambars usually will have a bit left over in the bottom of the bucket after feeding.   No problem.  Just share it with your poultry or your dogs for their care :).

Ewe-Ter-N TM (click here) helps support your doe (bitch, mare, etc) to encourage well timed efficient contractions including good delivery of the placenta.  If given several hours before kidding (birthing) it enables your doe or creature to have a better chance of getting the kids into proper position.  It's also helpful for the 'single buck kid' in a first freshener issue.     It's also given at birthing time.  It does not force them to birth, but works with their body to be more efficient.

Nav-All TM (Click here) tincture is an all natural naval dip to be used at birth (or as soon as you discover the birth!).   Just dip the naval to encourage it's natural antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, heart, lung, brain enhancing properties.   Nourish those babies with life giving nutrients rather than using toxic iodine (read the label!).   Remember whatever you put on the naval DOES go into your kids' bloodstream.  My Boer goat & sheep customers LOVE this product as it enables the kids & lambs to be up and nursing sooner meaning they get to go back into their warm house sooner!!!

Lavender (Click here) and eucalyptus (click here) essential oils are very valuable to have around during kidding season (read more in my book)  and beyond.  Also available on our website.

Cayenne powder (click here) and cayenne tincture (click here) are invaluable during kidding emergencies. I've used them on hemorrhaging does, shocky does, just born kids with no heartbeat (twice), bleeding navals, and the powder sprinkled on the nose of your just born kids will elicit a nice strong sneeze helping them to clear their breathing passages.  Medicinal grade of both are also on our website.

We also carry drenching syringes (click here), lambar nipples (click here) and weak kid (great for infusing the uterus) syringes (Click here) as well as a full line of udder wellness products (Udder Blast TM infusion, MammarEaze TM and GlandAide TM Salves (click here), HerBiotic TM herb mix, extract, salves (HerBiotic TM (click here) for support in bacterial, viral, fungal, external parasite, microbial issues).

For those that would like 'me' coaching them in the barn-  there is a WHOLE Chapter on birthing livestock including dealing with dystocia's (malpresentations) in my book. There is also a whole chapter on working with milking stock, one on raising young stock, one on parasites and so much more in over 500 pages!   Written textbook style so don't miss the foundational chapters in the front of the book- including the chapter on how to know how to dose and how to give your herbs.  For those that like to garden there's also a whole chapter on making a livestock herb garden.  The Accessible Pet, Equine and Livestock Herbal is also on our site- the only place to purchase signed copies J .(CLICK HERE)

HAPPY AND BLESSED KIDDING ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!

Failure to Thrive...  One Story...

1/14/2017

Picture
Here's a nubian doeling that was not doing well. They started working with Fir Meadow products- specifically GI Soother TM and Better Daze TM. She was so weak they kept a towel rolled up to help keep her upright. See how she's doing now- in the words of her owner "Thriving". You can find these products by clicking here.
Thank-you MS for sharing!

Picture
There are other reasons for failure to thrive,  but this doeling's problem was a parasite issue.   Her lungs also became involved as she was down so long.        I also recommend DWorm A TM, and in the case of lungs consider also Lung Support TM Tincture and HerBiotic TM herb mix.   Her current photo is below.

Natural Parasite Protocol for serious parasite/coccidia issues  * For any species *

I frequently get help requests to educate owners on helping animals overcome a large parasite problem.    Ideally one wants to be proactive with these problems and stay ahead of it,  but there are times of course whether one is new to livestock keeping, brings in a new but very infected animal to the farm, tries to stabilize a rescue or just having major life events turning one's life upside down for a time.    Here are some things to consider.

There are two products that are the most frequently purchased from our site from these problems.   Those are DWorm A tm and GI Soother tm.    DWorm A tm is for all species, pregnant, lactating or open and is historically used with most types of internal parasites including tapeworms.   GI Soother tm is our traditional approach of choice for coccidia and barberpole worm (Haemoncus contortus).  It can also be used for pregnant, lactating or open animals of any kind. We also have DWorm H tm under the extracts/tinctures page for heartworm and heart support  as well as DWorm MLL tm for menengial/liver fluke and lung worm,  though keeping animals on a consistent regular dosing with DWorm A tm helps their bodies to be less susceptible to those problems.  For the herb mixes here is the page to find them.  /www.firmeadowllc.com/store/c4/Herb_Mixes_%26_Supplies.html

Realize that with this protocol one is going to use the products much faster than one would with routine dosing once animals are in an improved state of wellness. So if you decide to work with our products you might order one more pound than you think necessary of each item you order.  It will keep for one year in good conditions and many clients have used them older than that, though I don't recommend that for best results.  Remember that to wait too long  will endanger the animal's life.   There are many stories however of animals seeming to be too far gone that do turn around to become healthy and productive.  So I always encourage people to go for it.  You just never know.

So if I found this problem in my herd, flock or kennel:

Day one  give a double dose of each product every two hours for several doses- 8 would be great.   as much of a pain as it is to drench them this is probably your best bet to get on top of it to start.   Later you can get them used to eating it in grain, with other substances (like applesauce or mashed banana) or making herb balls click here for that blog.

IF you are dealing with a coccidia overload and your animal is failing fast I would give a triple dose of GI Soother tm every hour until the creature stabilizes,  then go back to the rest of dosing suggested below.

Day 2 and three if you can give a double dose 4x per day,

day 4 thru ten double dose 2x per day.

Then twice per week after that EXCEPT for animals that seem weaker, underweight etc- those I would keep on GI Soother tm every day until they catch up on weight and health as it will help their gi tract repair itself from parasite damage and scar tissue.  that may be 4 months or possibly a year dependent on their damage.

GI Soother tm and/or DWorm A tm can be used daily if wanted.  The products also help the body to stop hemorrhaging, help the body fight infections in the GI tract, help to mineralize the body and DWorm A also helps the body to absorb toxins/molds in food just ingested as well as helping to stimulate the liver and oxygenate the placenta in pregnant creatures.

You will want to pay attention to cleaning and sanitizing your facilities including pastures if they are infected.   You can learn more about that and so much more to natural goat keeping from my book-   The Accessible Pet, Equine and Livestock Herbal  also on our site.  Over 500 pages.  Click here to purchase the book.

One can also consider adding Better Daze tm herb mix to their creature's diet to super nourish them.   They need their bodies to be built up again since the parasites have probably put them in a state of deficiency.

For weak animals MMune tm herb mix (click here) can also be considered to help thier bodies to support their immunity, which will be challenged with a large parasite load.  It's also challenged around the two weeks prior to two weeks after birthing time period so is another good time for immunity support.  It is also an important time to be sure your deworming program is on par, as parasites will and do take advantage of their hosts during this weakened time.  For puppies it is so easy to stir in DWorm A tm in their supplemental feeding and will help them feed themselves rather than parasites.

For a wonderful story shared with me in 2016 about these products in a very difficult area to deal with parasites (Texas) it may be fun for you to read this blog post. Click here.

When deworming a creature may cause diarrhea...

1/2/2017

Well built high quality medicinal dewormers always cause a reduction in diarrhea- right?   Well,  not always.   Here are some reasons when you may see diarrhea.

Herb Mix DWorm A ™ 16 oz (parasites, mycoplasma) 1- A fast parasite die off can cause diarrhea.  This is caused in animals with a high parasite load.   To get the best benefit from herbal dewormers you will want to break parasite lifecycles before they reach adulthood and the ability to do damage to your creature and reproduce.  Most animals are infecting themselves daily from grazing, eating or licking soil or bedding, getting feet with manure on them into feed (avoid allowing chickens to walk on hay, etc) and licking fencing, stall walls, etc. Parasites on the average reach maturity within just three weeks of ingestion but have been doing tissue damage to their host before that point.   Because a new cycle is started up to daily with new ingestions I suggest at least a once a week feeding,  but  more frequently if you live in a wet/humid climate or have an animal or animals that are more susceptible to parasite attacks, including young, senior and those with impaired immune systems.   Our MMune TM herb mix can also be fed to those creatures if wanted.   Get DwormA TM Click Herb Mix DWorm A ™ 16 oz (parasites, mycoplasma)

Get MMune TM Click Herb Mix MMune™ 8 oz

2- Sometimes a creature gets into something else in their feed or environment that causes diarrhea,  and sometimes that coincides wtih the use of a new product.  In those cases one doesn't know if it's something environmental or the herbs.   DWormA TM has been formulated to help the body absorb and release ingested toxins through the manure.  This also may cause loose stools.

3- A creature who's nutrition level is increased faster than the microbes in their rumen and/or intestinal tract is used to.   If this is the case back down to half of the dose you were using for a few days (about three) and then gradually work their body back up to the dose you want them on.    Ten days is considered an average amount of time to allow the flora to adjust to changes in diet.

4- Liver and gall bladder stimulation (note that equine and camelids do not have gall bladders) may cause loose stools, especially in an animal where these functions have been below optimum.  Our herbal dewormer does encourage liver and gallbladder function.  If you believe your animal may have an impaired or challenged liver from toxins in their feeds, meds or environmental then consider supporting those organs with our FreshStart TM .  Get FreshStart TM here Herb Mix FreshStart™ (Liver, GallBldr, Kidneys) 8 oz

5- Scar damage to the intestinal walls from previous high parasite or coccidia loads can also make it difficult to get ahead of a diarrhea-  but in these cases it usually would not start the same time an herbal dwormer would be started.  In cases where it is believed that the creature may have malabsorption issues consider putting them on GI Soother TM for at least a year,  longer if they still need to catch up on growth to what size & weight you think they should be.  This product is very gentle and nurturing to the intestinal tract and encourages it to heal itself while also helping the body deal with coccidia, barberpole worms, ulcers and bacterial assaults to the GI.  This product can be used concurrently with DWorm A TM and both products can be used with any creature.  In this case it may take weeks or months for the body to correct a malabsorption issue but the tissue will want to heal if it gets what it needs.  In these cases expect to be fighing diarrhea for some time until the intestinal tissue softens. Adding BetterDaze TM herb mix to thier nutritional program will help the body to heal itself faster with its wide range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients and can lessen the effects of malnutrition at a faster rate.   Get GI Soother TM here Herb Mix GI Soother™ Cocci Diarrhea Barberpole Ulcer support 16 oz

Get Better Daze TM here  Herb Mix BetterDaze™ 8 oz

There are also diseases such as Johnes that can cause diarrhea,  but again,  that is a problem that one would not expect to start concurrent with the start of using herbal dewormers.
